UTN Manager from SEH Technology now supports macOS 12 Monterey from Apple and its new state-of-the-art M1 architecture

SEH Technology, the specialist in professional network solutions, today announces it has adapted its SEH UTN Manager to the modern Apple operating system and current processor generations. The software tool now supports Apple processors of the M1 series

This makes it possible to manage all USB device and dongle servers from the SEH product portfolio and easily access the USB dongles and devices connected to them. SEH Technology guarantees compatibility with all Macs currently offered by Apple.

Industry challenges recognised

Speaking on the new development, Jörg Hecke, Product Marketing Manager at SEH Technology explains, "At the end of 2020, Apple had started to switch its hardware from the Intel architecture to its own ARM-based SoC CPU architecture. At the same time, macOS 12 (Monterey) of Apple's operating system was introduced; with it, important classes and frameworks were dropped, meaning our UTN Manager was no longer compatible."

As a result, SEH Technology could not support macOS 12 via its dongle and USB device servers, but the demand from customers for a corresponding adaptation of its management tool posed a significant opportunity for the company.

This is an exciting milestone in terms of compatibility with modern Intel and Apple processors for users of SEH Technology’s USB device and dongle servers. In 2019, Apple increasingly restricted the use of kernel extensions and declared them obsolete since the release of macOS Monterey. Regular use was therefore no longer possible at the lower levels relevant for the SEH UTN Manager.

"With Apple's switch to the new macOS version in conjunction with the increasingly widespread M1 chip-based Apple computers, we were faced with the task of creating a sensible, technically mature solution for our customers without imposing any customisations, cryptic settings or restrictions on the security of their user systems," said Hecke.

Evaluation phase for users and availability

In an ongoing evaluation round with customers, users from the field have been impressed with the performance and usability of the new management tool. SEH Technology is now offering all interested Apple users who use its USB and dongle devices to contact the team to trial the new version of the SEH UTN Manager.

This will be available to the market in the second quarter of 2022. Users of SEH Technology's USB device server and dongle server series will be able to download the new version free of charge from the SEH Technology website.

SEH Technology UTN Manager functionality

The SEH UTN Manager is the control system and software tool for USB device and dongle servers. The tool is used to establish and manage the connections to the connected USB devices.  All device servers present in the network are automatically found and added to a device list. As soon as one of the USB device servers is added to the list, all USB devices connected to it are visible and can be administered. After a click on the USB device icon and subsequent activation, the device is then connected to the client in the same way as if it were connected locally via USB. The software is installed on all devices that are used to access a USB device or dongle server in the network.

The current SEH UTN Manager version 3.3.5 supports the operating systems across Windows 10, 11, Server 2012 R2, Server 2019, Server 2022, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian, RHEL, SLES, openSUSE LEAP, Oracle, CentOS, CentOS Stream) and macOS (10.15 Catalina, 11 Big Sur).

With the new 3.4x version of the UTN Manager tool, SEH Technology exclusively supports the current operating system macOS 12 (Monterey) or higher - as well as the still common Intel-based and the upcoming Apple M1 "ARM"-based SoC (Silicon-on-Chip) architecture. SEH Technology's UTN Manager will therefore work natively on both architectures.
